Between the Lions
Television is a powerful influence in children's lives. A new classroom literacy initiative teams WILL and the Champaign School District's Title One Program to help teachers and parents use television in a positive way to reinforce reading skills.

During the second quarter of the 2006-2007 school year, children in Champaign's Title One kindergarten and first grade classrooms watched an episode of the PBSKids program "Between the Lions" and received supplemental instruction. District literacy specialists along with classroom teachers created lesson plans that complemented the show and took advantage of the whole language and phonics techniques used in each episode. "Between the Lions" Family Nights encouraged parents to use the TV program to support reading skills at home.

Two-thirds of parents say they've seen their child imitate positive behaviors from television.
